  This is a small masonry company operated out of one man's house in Chester. Prior to agreeing to do the work, like the other small shop masons- I was given the labor price of $1.75/block and .43 cents/brick. It's a very standard price. After the job was completed I was given the invoice from the owner in the below picture (noticed how he says he water "proffed" the foundation, hilarious). Who could make any sense out of this bill and understand what they were being charged for? The bill didn't equate to the 1.75/block and .43 cents/brick. Gary said it was because he "marked up the materials" and that the material cost for this little crawlspace was $5,000 (delivered from Shade and Wise in Powhatan). I counted the brick and block, sand, mortar- and priced it myself. I guess if you let Gary supply your masonry materials from his account at Shade and Wise, he marks them up 150% and makes a couple extra grand. You can use a big yellow page masonry company and pay less than Nyquist masonry. Below is part of my email interaction over the bill with Gary Nyquist, so you can get the jist of the level of professionalism:
  
  My email to Gary after getting the bill in the picture:
  "Gary, I'm a little surprised by the price- I hadn't imagined the brick and block numbers you originally gave me equating to the sum of your bill. I'm not complaining, I just want to better understand the breakdown for the bill (square feet of brick, etc.). Was the labor for the front porch piers expensive? I'm just interested in learning more about the cost breakdown so I can make better design decisions in the future. We've been happy to work with you."
  
  Gary Nyquist's one line email response 5 days later:
  "$12.20 sq ft for foundation $45 square foot for brick piers and $500 for waterproofing
  Sent from my iPhone"
  
  My response:
  "Are you also charging me 12.20 sq. ft. for the 8" block below grade with no brick?"
  
  No response from Gary. Gary refused to provide me a bill that broke anything down, no list of how many brick or block, sq. footage, etc. I suppose this is because if he provided any detail- it would quantify the degree to which I'd been ripped off.
